MCU Fantastic Four Movie Confirmed At SDCC 2019

The Fantastic Four are officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although The Walt Disney Company only recently completed their acquisition of 21st Century Fox and reacquired the film rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, Marvel is already set to reveal to fans that they are bringing the Fantastic Four to the big screen at some point in the near future. However, they’re not revealing exactly when that will happen just yet.

Over the past several years, 20th Century Fox made two attempts at launching the Fantastic Four into an epic film series; the first of which was Tim Story’s Fantastic Four in 2005 — starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis — which actually ended up getting a sequel. The second, however, wasn’t as successful. Josh Trank’s critically maligned Fantastic Four reboot in 2015 — starring Miles Teller, Kata Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell — failed to even recover the studio’s cost to produce the movie. But with Marvel Studios in charge, fans are hoping for a proper, more comic-accurate adaptation, which is now in the early stages of development.

At the end of Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that a Fantastic Four movie is on the way, though he refrained from sharing any more details beyond that it’s in development. Since the studio was only ready to share movies and TV shows up to the end of 2021, it’s possible — repeat: possible — that the Fantastic Four movie could release in 2022 or 2023.

Of course, confirming that a Fantastic Four movie is on the way is only the first step. From here, it’ll be about who the writer and director are, as well as who the four cast members will be who will star as Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing. Plus, it’ll be curious to see who the villain is this time around. Fox already tried to use Doctor Doom twice, and that didn’t work out. Considering what Marvel has been doing with the Spider-Man films, incorporating new villains instead of previously used ones, audiences just might see another Fantastic Four villain at the helm.

Regardless of who ends up helming and starring in the Fantastic Four movie, Marvel fans just want to know when it will release. Unfortunately, they’re going to have to wait until at least next year’s Comic-Con panel (if Marvel shows up next year) to get that news. They may very well hold off on updating fans about Fantastic Four until everything is set and ready to go. After all, they weren’t ready to talk about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 yet, and that’s far into development.
